Monkey Tool
Just like there are a lot of monkeys in the world, there are a lot of monkey tools. In blacksmithing, a monkey tool is what you use to dress the shoulder of a forged tenon but growing up, my Grandfather referred to a monkey tool as any odd, often adapted tool one uses for an obscure reason. Most often, it was scrounged together in necessity and never replaced.
My current go-to monkey tool has an alder handle with a 5” thin blade I keep honed really sharp coming out one side and a 1 3/4” awl coming out of the other with both side capped with copper sheet for durability.
The form came out of what I needed when we had first moved here. We were building a pole barn, coop and fenced-in garden but for various reasons, I found that the tools I needed most often were a flexible razor and an awl, so I forged it out of 5160 and made the handle out of a fallen alder branch.
This is not to say that anyone other than me would find this useful, but I’ve found that most people who work with their hands find that they need special tools for whatever they are doing. If you are one of those people and have a specialized tool in mind, I’d love to talk to you about it.
